What this document covers
English Speaking Coach is a voice-first English speaking practice product for adult Spanish-speaking learners. This page explains, in plain language, what information the app actually handles and why, based directly on how the app is built rather than on a generic template.
Information you provide
If you create an account, we ask for an email address and a password. If the app is running in an invite-only pilot/testing mode, we may also ask you to rate a practice session and optionally leave a short comment.
Your spoken practice: how it actually reaches us
When you speak, speech recognition provided by your browser or device operating system converts your voice into text before this app ever sees it. Depending on your specific browser or device, that conversion may happen on the device itself or on that provider's own servers; this app does not control, and cannot guarantee, which. What our own code does is provable and consistent: it never uploads raw audio to its own servers. Only the resulting text, along with the practice question it answers and a short amount of recent conversation history, is sent to our AI coaching service (OpenAI) to generate the next response from the coach, and is used locally and, if you have an account, in our cloud database to track which English skills you have practiced. The speech-recognition provider (for example, your phone operating system or your web browser vendor) handles your voice separately from us and under its own privacy practices, which we do not control.
Learning and progress information
To act like a real coach rather than a generic chatbot, the app keeps track of things like which English skills you have been introduced to, practiced, or used independently; common mistakes and whether you have corrected them (for each remembered mistake, this can include the most recent sentence in which it happened, as text, together with its corrected version — never a recording of your voice); and an internal estimate of your practice level (A1, A2, or B1). This is stored on your device, and, only if you create an account, also in our cloud database, so it can follow you to another device.
Account and subscription information
Your account (email address and a unique account identifier) is managed by Supabase, our authentication and database provider. Where the app offers a paid subscription, purchases are handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play and by RevenueCat, a subscription-management service; we never see or store your payment card details. We only store whether your subscription is currently active.
Keeping the service secure
To prevent abuse of the AI coaching feature, our servers keep a small record, tied to your account, of when you used it, whether the request succeeded, and how much it cost to run. This record does not include what you actually said.
If something goes wrong on our servers, we also record technical error details, such as which part of the service failed and an error code, so we can fix the problem. These error records are designed to exclude what you said, your email address, and sign-in or access tokens.
Information stored only on your device
Some information, including your learning progress, your session preferences, and, only in an invite-only pilot/testing version of the app, a local log of your own practice sessions used to help us review early testing, is stored in the local storage built into your browser or device. The released version of the app does not keep that practice log. Your learning progress is not sent to us unless you have an account, in which case it is also saved to our cloud database so you can continue on another device. When you sign out, the learning progress stored on that device is removed from it (your account's copy in our cloud database is kept, and returns when you sign in again).
Pilot/testing feedback
During an invite-only pilot phase, if you submit feedback after a practice session (a rating, a reason a session felt difficult, and an optional comment), a small summary, including session length, topic, your rating, and your comment, is sent to a private spreadsheet the product owner uses to improve the app. This summary does not include a transcript of what you said.
Why we use this information
- To run the core speaking-practice feature and generate responses from the coach.
- To remember your progress across sessions and devices.
- To verify an active subscription where one is required.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
- During pilot testing only, to understand and improve the early product experience.
Service providers we use
- Vercel: hosts the app and its servers, including the technical error records described above.
- Supabase: accounts and cloud storage of your learning progress.
- OpenAI: generates the responses from the AI coach during your practice.
- RevenueCat: manages subscription/entitlement status where subscriptions are offered.
- The speech-recognition service provided by your device or browser.
We encourage you to review the privacy practices published by each provider for details of how they individually handle data sent to them.
How long we keep information
We keep your account and learning progress for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account (see below), we permanently delete your account and the associated cloud data described above.
Deleting your account
You can request account deletion from Settings inside the app, when that feature is available on your version of the app. Deleting your account permanently removes your login and the cloud data tied to it. Deleting your account does not automatically cancel a subscription purchased through Apple or Google; subscriptions are managed separately, directly with the store you subscribed through.
Security
We use industry-standard practices, including per-user database access rules and verified sign-in tokens, to help protect your information. No online service can guarantee perfect security.
Who this service is for
English Speaking Coach is intended for adult learners. It is not directed at children.
